3-Day Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage Itinerary: Trekking Options & Travel
Visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine is a spiritual journey that many pilgrims undertake, and there are several ways to reach the temple from Delhi. Here’s a detailed 3-day itinerary including travel, accommodation, and trekking options like palki, e-rickshaw, and horse/mule rides.
Day 1: Travel from Delhi to Katra
Morning
- Departure: Start early from Delhi. You can take a train, flight, or bus to reach Jammu or directly to Katra. The train journey takes about 10-12 hours, while a flight to Jammu takes around 1.5 hours, followed by a 2-hour drive to Katra.
- Options:
- Train: Board a train like the Vande Bharat, Shri Shakti Express or Jammu Tawi Express. Vande Bharat is recommended and one of the best trains from Delhi to Katra.
- Flight: Fly to Jammu Airport and then take a taxi or bus to Katra.
Afternoon
- Arrival in Katra: Check-in at your pre-booked hotel or explore nearby stay options like ashrams and dharamshala also. Katra has a range of accommodation options, from budget to luxury.
- Rest & Preparation: After checking in, rest and prepare for the trek. Ensure you have the Yatra Registration Slip, which is mandatory for the journey. You can get it from the Yatra Registration Counter, online, your hotel staff may also have a Yatra Slip.
Evening
- Local Exploration & Shopping: Explore the local market for any necessary items or souvenirs.
- Dinner: Enjoy a meal at a local restaurant. Katra has many vegetarian dining options as the entire town observes a strict vegetarian policy due to the religious significance of the place.
Day 2: Vaishno Devi Trek
Early Morning
- Start Trek: Begin your trek early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds.
- Options for Reaching the Shrine:
- On Foot: The trek is around 13 km from Katra to Bhawan (the main temple). It takes about 3-6 hours depending on your pace.
- Palki: For those who cannot walk the entire distance, palkis (palanquins) are available. This option is suitable for elderly or physically challenged pilgrims.
- Horse/Mule Ride: You can hire a horse or mule to ride up. They are available from the base and at designated points along the route.
- E-Rickshaw: Battery-operated e-rickshaws are available from Adhkuwari to Bhawan for a part of the journey, which is helpful for those who want to minimise walking. It’s recommended to book an E-Rickshaw in advance through online booking, you may not get a seat in real time.
Afternoon
- Darshan at Bhawan: After reaching Bhawan, freshen up and prepare for the darshan. Lockers are available for keeping personal belongings.
- Visit Bhairon Baba Temple: It is a common belief that the pilgrimage is incomplete without visiting the Bhairon Baba Temple, which is 2.5 km from Bhawan. You can walk, hire a horse or take a cable car ride for this short distance.
Evening
- Return to Katra: Return back to Katra using the same options as ascending. It is advisable to start the descent early to reach Katra by night.
- Rest & Relax: Once back in Katra, relax and have a light dinner.
Day 3: Return to Delhi
Morning
- Leisure Time in Katra: Spend the morning at leisure. You can visit local temples or the Katra market.
- Checkout: Check out from the hotel and head towards the Railway station/Airport for your return journey.
Afternoon
- Departure to Delhi: Depending on your travel mode, either board a train, flight, or bus back to Delhi.
- Options:
- Train: Several trains run between Jammu and Delhi, Very few from Katra to Delhi.
- Flight: If flying, head to Jammu Airport.
Evening
- Arrival in Delhi: You should arrive in Delhi by evening, marking the end of your pilgrimage.
Extra Tips:
- Weather & Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for trekking. Carry warm clothes, especially if travelling during winter.
- Hydration & Snacks: Keep hydrated and carry some snacks for the trek.
- Medical Kit: Carry basic medicines and a first-aid kit.
